In Memoriam Udo Moll (1966-2023)
A tribute performance dedicated to the late Cologne trumpeter Udo Moll, exploring his conceptual framework “Das Mollsche Gesetz” (Moll’s Law) through live improvisation and audiovisual elements. The performance investigates the systematic relationship between sound and silence as compositional structure.
Concept: Moll’s Law
Udo Moll’s compositional principle establishes that one minute of improvised music must be followed by one minute of silence, creating an alternating structure that challenges conventional performance temporality. This systematic approach to silence draws from John Cage’s pioneering work while establishing its own rigorous temporal framework.
Performance
Brazilian artist Mariá Portugal, living in Cologne, interpreted works including The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers” within this temporal constraint, collaborating with Sebastian Gramss (bass) and Matthias Muche (trombone). The performance evolved from strict adherence to Moll’s Law into a more fluid exploration, incorporating Portugal’s vocal work, percussion, melodic fragments, and live digital visuals that together created what critics described as “a 50-minute intoxication of impressions.”
