Historischer Kontext

Anfang der 1950er Jahre: Einrichtung des Studios für elektronische Musik, WDR Köln

Ab den 1960er Jahren: Das Studio wird zur konzentrierten Entwicklungsplattform neuer elektronischer Musik, u.a. Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, Johannes Fritsch

1968: Mit "Black Gate Cologne" entsteht die erste künstlerische Fernsehsendung von Otto Piene und Aldo Tambellini in Zusammenarbeit mit dem WDR Fernsehen Köln = ein Kreativ Tatort

Projekt

Inspiriert durch die Werke des Studios für elektronische Musik und Black Gate Cologne entwickelt die Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble musikFabrik ein daran anknüpfendes Programm, das mit Klangmaschinen, Lichtobjekten und visuellen Notationen aufgeführt und performed wird.

Electronic Gate Cologne represents a collaborative intermedia project that establishes a dialogue between sound and visual arts, developed jointly by the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) and Ensemble musikFabrik. The performance explores the intersection of sound machines, light objects, cybernetics, and notation systems.

Historical Context and Curatorial Concept

The project draws inspiration from two pivotal moments in electronic media history:

1950s-1960s: The establishment and development of the WDR Studio for Electronic Music in Cologne, which became a concentrated development platform for new electronic music featuring pioneers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, and Johannes Fritsch.

1968: The creation of "Black Gate Cologne," the first artistic television broadcast by Otto Piene and Aldo Tambellini in collaboration with WDR Television Cologne, establishing a creative crime scene in media art.
