Telefante

Long-term project by Juan Orozco and Luis Negrón van Grieken

The initial impulse that gave birth to this long-term project 2005, came from the desire of assemble an optical apparatus that could be played live.

Since then, Juan Orozco and Luis Negrón has been cooperating as Telefante. In a related post-dadaist procedure, TELEFANTE unite the physical formal space and the numerical generated space, giving the images a timeless touch — performing somewhere between the magic of the projected image and the slippery present of improvisation.

TELEFANTE use an old cardboard box as its main instrument / interface to produce images. The images are the result of an expedition in ancient archives (old engraves and illustrations) and its mix in the hybrid space at the interior of the paper box.

The relationship between the space inside the box and the space generated in the projection (heterogeneous, conceptual, cartesian, allegorical and associative) represents a key moment in TELEFANTE's approach: it becomes a bridge made of light among the miscellaneous materials, techniques in play.

Telefante can take different forms, like performance, dance, intermedia works but also as an installation, as it was showed 2017 at the Contemporary Art Museum in Ecuador during the Cuenca Biennial of Contemporary Arts.
