| Luis Negrón van Grieken - Media Artist & Live Cinema

Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM)

From 2008 to 2018, I served as a asisstant professor at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln - KHM), one of Germany's leading institutions for media arts education. In this role, I guided students in art, design, and film through the development of open creative processes within the field of Media and Video-Art.

Media Scenography 2008–2016

Media scenographies and dramaturgies have increasingly transformed the aesthetics and expressive means of space-related works in recent years. This is clearly evident in artistic installation, but also increasingly in stage, performance, and exhibition contexts—becoming especially visible in the staging of urban environments and public architecture.

Spatial experience is therefore characterized by various elements: dimensions and proportions, form and material, color, acoustics and sound, light and shadow, aromas, static and moving elements.

Interactive Media / Video 2016–2018

Luis Negrón van Grieken

I understood the teaching area of Interactive Media and Video as an open platform for exploring cultural, social, and aesthetic aspects arising from the relationship between narration, space, and the use of electronic media. For me, it played a crucial role in how these relationships lead to a poetics that transports both philosophical and social content. My pedagogical approach emphasized experimental investigation of the medium's technical possibilities while fostering critical discourse around the artistic strategies available to contemporary video art. Students worked across diverse formats including single-channel video, video installation, performance, sound art, interactive media, and open experimental formats.

Academic Legacy

The collaborative nature of my teaching culminated in joint exhibitions outside the university, where students presented their work in professional contexts. These exhibitions included series such as "Nelson ist ausgebrochen" (2012), "A" (2013), "Gaze" (2014), "Deep Haus" (2015), "Perlen un Korallen" (2016), and "Timeshare Vacation" (2017).

My extensive international teaching experience, spanning institutions across Germany, Poland (Katowice's Art Academy), and Colombia (Nuiversidad Nacional, reflects a commitment to cross-cultural artistic exchange and pedagogical innovation. These collaborations, particularly through the DAAD exchange program with UNAL Bogotá, addressed the role of artists and filmmakers in society and their possibilities for intervention in complex social dramas.

Through this academic journey, I helped shape a generation of media artists who continue to explore the boundaries between technology, narrative, and social engagement across diverse cultural contexts.
