UNSTUMM - Conversation of Moving Image and Sound

Part of the UnStumm AsiaTour 2018, this live cinema session brought together Malaysian and German artists for an experimental audiovisual performance at Toccata concert space in Kuala Lumpur. The event exemplified cross-cultural artistic collaboration, where improvised film and music (Echtzeitfilm) created a dynamic dialogue between moving images and sound.

UnStumm is a project for improvised film and music that facilitates cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration between filmmakers, video artists, and musicians. Organized and curated by video artist Claudia Schmitz and guitarist/sound artist Nicola L. Hein, the project creates an environment of cultural and creative exchange where a common complex artistic language emerges.

The Kuala Lumpur session featured an international lineup combining Malaysian artistic voices with German experimental practitioners:

Malaysian Artists:

  • Sarah Ameera (videoart)
  • Fairuz Sulaiman (videoart)
  • Siew-Wai Kok (voice)
  • Yong Yandsen (saxophone)

German Artists:

  • Luis Negrón van Grieken (videoart)
  • Nicola L. Hein (guitar)
  • Claudia Schmitz (moving image on sculpture)
  • Axel Dörner (trumpet, electronics)

The performance explored multidisciplinary improvisation through structured narrative frameworks developed during intensive rehearsals. These Echtzeit-movies reflect on themes of interculturality, cultural identity, cross-cultural communication, and the history of artistic thought across different cultures.

Supported by Goethe Institut Kuala Lumpur and the Ministry of Culture, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
