#078 Film ohne Film
2017 / curatorial, performance

The seminar focused on developing time-based audiovisual forms that operate without recording through classical media such as film, video, and audio equipment, or that make these visible and audible in alternative forms. All variations of kinetic, hydraulic, thermodynamic, algorithmic, or performative image and sound generation are conceivable and welcome. The works can be conceived as installations, performances, or interventions in public space.
A presentation of the works and concepts developed within the seminar was planned as part of the 31st Stuttgart Filmwinter, which took place in February 2018 following the winter semester.
"filmohnefilm" – the title of the exhibition implies a paradoxical negation: what remains of film when you subtract the film from it? This question was addressed by the seminar of the same name in the winter semester 2017/18 at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
The intention behind this omission was to stimulate renewed reflection on the various types of black boxes – cameras, projectors, and computers – that surround us as a matter of course in our mediatized everyday life. The goal was to become aware of fundamental functional principles and, through playful approaches of imitation and misuse, breaking open and hacking, to arrive at divergent forms and new possibilities for knowledge.
A second level of reflection focused on the basic functions and mechanisms of perception – the human black box. How does the impression (the illusion) of movement arise? How are objects related and connected to each other? How do we distinguish foreground from background, the incidental from the essential? How do meaning and significance emerge?
